Rugby has been such a big part of my School and University life. For me this sport is so much more than just a physical activity. It’s a way for me to let off steam, to be a part of something much bigger than myself, most importantly this was the major mechanism by which I deployed and thereby improved on my leadership abilities and I owe most of what I am today to this beautiful Sport. Rugby is one of the most physically and mentally demanding sports that one can take on and it is this pure nature of the game that makes it one of the most, if not The Most Popular Sport in the country.
In 2018 July I represented the Sri Lanka University Rugby Sevens team for World University Rugby Championship held in Namibia, I was named as the Vice-captain of the team and we were able to secure world rank 8 in the tournament (Rank 1- South Africa, 2- Australia, 3- France). This is the highest achievement of a Sri Lankan team at World University Championships.
Our high point in University Rugby career would be ending up as a Cup-runner up at the KDU 10 a side tournament in 2016 under my leadership, a tournament in which most of the rugby playing local universities (Both State and Private) participated. We were able to beat top teams such as Sri Lanka Military Academy, KDU, SLIM and University of Kelaniya.
I was also awarded as the Best Rugby player in 2016 for scoring 14 tries in 5 matches at SLUG 2016 which was a record and I was proud to wear university colours in 2015,2016, 2017 and 2018 besides I am the only ruggerite in the university arena to triumph Sri Lanka University Colours consecutively in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Also in 2015 I participated in UITM Asian Rugby 7s Tournament Representing USJP which was held in Malaysia.
During my school years, I captained the under 12, 14, and 16 teams at Vidyartha College in Kandy. Additionally, in 2012, I assumed leadership of the Kingswood College 1st XV Rugby team. Our achievements included securing the position of runners-up in the all-island rugby sevens competitions in both 2011 and 2012, as well as achieving the runners-up spot in the School Rugby League in 2010.
